Karl Wells speaks with Jeff A. Webb, former Head of the Department of History at Memorial University, and author of Voice of Newfoundland – A Social History of the Broadcasting Corporation of Newfoundland, 1939 -1949 (University of Toronto Press). Webb’s book covers early radio broadcasting in Newfoundland, commercial and public service branches.

Earle McCurdy was a journalist and a politician; but for most of his life he worked in the labour movement, specifically in leadership positions with the fish harvesters union in Newfoundland and Labrador, now known as Unifor-FFAW. Ultimately, he headed the union in Newfoundland and Labrador. Karl Wells speaks with Earle about the history of the famous union.

Mary Shortall is a well-known Canadian labour leader and community activist. She’s currently (2025) the President of the New Democratic Party of Canada. In this interview she talks about her early life, career, the labour movement, and her involvement with NL Premier Andrew Furey’s Economic Recovery Team. She also shares her views on the role activism plays in social justice and shaping government policy to benefit all citizens.

Dr. Margot Duley is the niece of Margaret Iris Duley, Newfoundland’s first internationally recognized novelist. She’s written the definitive biography of Margaret Duley called, “Extraordinary Passages, The Life and Times of Margaret Iris Duley, Newfoundland’s Pathbreaking Novelist.” In this interview Karl Wells asks Margot Duley about her aunt’s formative years, how living through two world wars affected her outlook and writing, and about Margaret’s search for the deeper meaning of life.

Dr. Mike Wahl is a Professor of Medicine at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He’s also a health explorer, because for most of his life he’s been seeking answers to what makes people healthy and happy. He shares what he’s learned in various ways.
