Every Newfoundlander knows Karl Wells from “Here and Now” where he delivered the weather forecast during the evening news. As a12-year-old boy in 1980, I remember Karl’s earnest and clear voice and his kind and friendly manner. Karl’s objective voice comes through in his memoir, detailing his early life and awareness of his sexuality, anti gay harassment at the CBC and his 45-year relationship with his partner Larry. As a Newfoundlander I remember only too well what it was like to be gay in the 1990s – and the homophobia and discrimination. There is joy in this memoir, tears and resilience. Karl has not only survived — but he and Larry have thrived and made a happy life for themselves with friends and family. Karl’s story resonates with mine and will with other gay Newfoundlanders. Breakwater has produced a handsome edition: excellent design and paper quality. Every Newfoundlander should read this memoir.
